About Cohere
At Cohere, we are on a
mission to scale intelligence to serve humanity by developing powerful AI
models that can help transform industries. We are focused on training and
deploying frontier models that support developers and enterprises in building
AI systems for transformative applications like semantic search,
retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and conversational agents. Our work is
fundamental to the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence, and we
believe in the potential of AI to create magical, human-like experiences.
Our team is composed of
researchers, engineers, and designers who are passionate about their craft,
working at the cutting edge of technology. We pride ourselves on having one of
the best teams in the world, and we believe that a diverse range of perspectives
is essential for building exceptional products.
We are looking for talented and
driven individuals to join us in our mission and help shape the future of AI.
Why This Role?
We are on a mission to build AI
systems that can understand the world and make these systems safely accessible
to everyone. At Cohere, data quality is crucial to this process. Our Large
Language Models (LLMs) learn in a manner similar to humans — through feedback.
As a Data Annotator, you will play a key role in labeling, auditing, and
correcting text outputs from both human-generated and model-generated tasks,
improving the safety, accuracy, and performance of our models.
In this role, you will make a
lasting impact by ensuring the safety of the AI models we are building. The
work will involve engaging with both human-generated and model-generated
content, which may include explicit or sensitive material. Your annotations
will help prevent the models from producing toxic, unsafe, or unintended
outputs.
Key Responsibilities
As a Safety Annotator, you
will be tasked with the following responsibilities:
- Improve Model Safety: You will label,
proofread, edit, and improve both human-written and machine-generated
text. This includes working with content that could be sexual, violent, or
psychologically disturbing in nature, ensuring that the final output is
safe and appropriate for users.
- Reading and Text-Based Tasks: You will
efficiently complete reading and text-based assignments with meticulous
attention to detail.
- Preference-Based Tasks: You will evaluate
and complete tasks to determine which responses best adhere to Cohere's
style guide, ensuring consistency across the data.
- Provide Feedback: You will collaborate with
other team members, offering constructive feedback to improve the quality
of the content and the AI models.
- Detail-Oriented Execution: You will be
expected to handle repetitive and precise tasks with high accuracy,
ensuring all annotations are performed consistently and without error.
Required Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who
possess the following skills and experiences:
- Expert Writing and Editing Skills: You must
have a strong command of written English, with the ability to produce
high-quality writing and proofreading skills. A background in writing and
editing is highly preferred, and you will need to complete a writing
assessment as part of the application process.
- Attention to Detail: A high level of
attention to detail is crucial. You should be the kind of person who
meticulously reviews everything for accuracy and correctness — even the
smallest errors matter.
- Emotional Resilience: This role involves
annotating texts that may contain unsafe, explicit, or disturbing content
(e.g., sexual, violent, or psychologically disturbing material). You must
be able to handle these types of content with emotional resilience.
- Experience in Content Moderation or Trust and
Safety: At least 1 year of experience in content moderation or trust
and safety is required.
- Ability to Handle Repetitive Tasks: You
should have a high tolerance for repetitive and monotonous work while
maintaining excellent time management and urgency.
- Bonus Points for Multilingual Skills:
Fluency in a language other than English is a plus but not required.
Candidate Journey
The recruitment process for this
role includes several stages designed to assess both your skills and emotional
resilience:
- Initial Screening: After submitting your
application, our Talent Team will review your resume and writing samples.
- Virtual Meet & Greet: If selected, you’ll
have a short video interview with a member of our Operations team to get
to know you better.
- Practical Assessment: You'll complete a
series of language-based tasks, including writing samples and interactions
with a chatbot, to assess your written communication skills.
- Emotional Resilience Assessment: This will
test your ability to handle stressful and emotionally challenging content,
ensuring you can perform well under such circumstances.
- Offer: If successful, you’ll be offered an
independent contractor agreement.
